Twelve

I woke up to the sound of the front doorbell ringing loudly—not once but several times. I pulled my pillow over my head to block the noise. Kai must have left our bedroom door wide open when he came up, as I heard Dad’s voice call out, “Okay, hold on, I’m coming.” I heard him open the door. I half sat up to hear who was there. It was Cass’ voice. I couldn’t help grinning. When she said “see you later,” I didn’t think she’d meant first thing in the morning. I looked over to see if the noise had woken Kai. He stirred and turned over on his back, rubbing his eyes.

“Good morning, Mr. McHale,” Cass said.

“Good morning, Cass. Isn’t it your weekend off?”

“Yes,” she said, laughing. “That’s why I’m here! I’m doing some cave exploring this morning. It’s up the track that cuts across behind the resort. I wondered if your boys would like to come along. That is, if they’re not doing anything?”

“I’m sure Jack and Kai are free,” I heard Dad say. “But I’ll need James to help me this morning. I’ve a couple of contractors coming to remodel some cottages. I need him to help before the weather breaks.”

I jumped out of bed, slipped into my boardies, and rushed downstairs. When I reached the bottom of the stairs, I slowed down to a walk, pumped up my chest and brushed my hair back with my hand. I strolled towards the front door, putting on my casual surfer look. Dad heard me and turned around.

“Morning, Son.”

“Hi, Dad,” I replied, pushing my hair out of my eyes.

“Cass has something to ask you.”

“Good to see you again, Cass. How’s it going?” I asked, amazed my words came out normally, rather than in the form of some incoherent babble that reflected the wave of excitement I felt seeing her standing there.

“Hi, Jack. I was telling your dad that there’s a cave I’d like to explore this morning. I thought you guys might like to come along if you’re not doing anything.” Although I’d been planning on surfing that morning, spending time with Cass was a much better option.

“Sure thing,” I said.

“Cool. Should be fun.”

I stared at her a moment before I remembered that she’d invited all three of us. “Uh, hang on,” I said. “I’ll give Kai a yell.” I called out, “Kai! Cass is here. We’re going caving, if you’re interested.”

Next thing I knew, Kai was sliding down the stairs’ handrail. He landed perfectly on two feet and walked towards us. “Count me in,” he said, winking at me.

Since just about every girl that has ever met James has developed a crush on him, I thought Cass might be disappointed that he couldn’t join us, but she didn’t seem to be—no looking around for him, no pouting or sudden change of mind about the plans. I was puzzled but wouldn’t waste time thinking about it. I wanted to make the most of the opportunity. “Let’s get our gear together,” I said.
